GPTalk - your university-internal AI chat service

GPTalk offers all university members low-threshold, data protection-compliant access to modern language models such as ChatGPT from OpenAI as well as to powerful open source AIs - conveniently in the browser, without an external account and without passing on personal data.

The service is aimed at all areas of everyday university life: from teaching and studying to administration, research and personal development. The aim is to promote the sensible and considered use of generative AI in as secure an environment as possible - as an alternative to the use of commercial services with private accounts, which is often questionable in terms of security and data protection.

Data protection & security

  • No disclosure of personal data to AI providers

  • Storage with external AI providers
    When using OpenAI, the prompt and generated response are temporarily stored for a maximum of 30 days - exclusively for abuse control. The GWDG's open source models do not store any data. In both cases, there is no use for training purposes and no manual evaluation - unless there is a concrete suspicion of misuse.

  • Saving the chats in GPTalk
    GPTalk only stores encrypted content: Your chats are encrypted locally in the browser before they are transmitted to the GPTalk server and stored there. They are also transmitted in encrypted form when they are loaded from the history and are only decrypted in the browser.
    Neither the university nor GPTalk administrators have access to the content.

  • Personal protection with Datakey
    When you log in for the first time, you create a personal data key. You can only access your encrypted chats with this key - even across devices. Without this key, nobody can access your content, not even in the event of a support case.

  • Secure group chats
    Group chats are also encrypted. Only group members have access. The necessary group key is distributed securely between the participants.

Important: If you lose your personal data key, you will not be able to restore your saved chats.

Terms of use & rules of conduct

GPTalk enables secure access to generative AI - but this access is also bound by certain rules. All users are obliged to comply with the applicable terms of use and ethical guidelines. These include, among other things:

  • no input of personal or confidential data,
  • no use for illegal, discriminatory or abusive purposes,
  • independent review and critical evaluation of the generated content,
  • transparency towards colleagues when GPTalk is used in joint work processes,
  • respectful interaction in group chats, no insults, no spam.
