Labster - the virtual laboratory

Since October 2024, the virtual laboratory Labster has been available to all students and lecturers at the University of Hohenheim via a campus license, initially for a period of five years.

The educational software covers a variety of scientific topics such as

  • Nutrition and food sciences,
  • Microbiology and molecular biology,
  • Ecology and climate change,
  • Biodiversity and physiology,
  • and many more.

It offers laboratory simulations for the introduction to common methods, such as

  • Western Blot and ELISA,
  • PCR and CRISPR,
  • Microscopy and spectrophotometry,
  • Instruction in laboratory safety
  • and explains the principles of scientific experiments and measurements.

The software can be used as a supplement to teaching or for self-study. Students can familiarise themselves independently and playfully with topics or methods and use the simulations to prepare for real laboratory work.

Access for students

Would you like to try Labster, access various fully equipped laboratories, and explore basic concepts and practice methods in a fun way in addition to lectures and internships—whenever and wherever you want?
Register at Labster with your Hohenheim email address and the course code D8CC89DB to gain access to over 300 simulations on various scientific topics.

Access for teachers

  • If you would like to try out simulations first and do not yet need a course, you can register directly in the Teacher's Library with your email address and the code D522DD77 to gain access to all simulations.
  • If you would like to create a course with specific content to which you can invite your students (either via a course link, a course code, or by inserting data from an Excel table), please send an email to schnell-digital@uni-hohenheim.de. You will receive access to Labster and we will create a course for you. If you would like to use Labster in different courses and need multiple courses, please let us know in your email how many courses you would like us to create for you. The video by Malte Staps (Director of Go to Market at Labster) provides introductory information about the software and course administration.
  • To fill a course with content, you can select individual simulations directly from the catalog and insert them into your course.
  • Alternatively, you can use Labster's appointment booking tool to schedule a 10-15 minute appointment and use the “Syllabus Mapping” option to suggest thematically relevant simulations, compile them in your course, and request an ILIAS link. This ILIAS link cannot be used to track whether students have completed simulations or what their results were.
