You hardware server can be operated by us in the Machine Hall. The room is air-conditioned, secured from power failure, and the server is connected to the data network redundantly.

No additional support in server operation is given, however. Operation and maintenance are left entirely to you.

User Regulations

  1. This service can be restricted or ended unilaterally.
  2. The servers may only be accessed during the opening hours of the Machine Hall after making an appointment by telephone. A maximum of two people may enter at once.
  3. The institute will name one person responsible for the system and at least one replacement and inform KIM.
  4. The institute is solely responsible for the server operation.
  5. An official photo ID is required to access the Machine Hall.
In order to be able to act quickly if the air-conditioning fails or if emergency power is required, the KIM must have access rights to the system with the right to shut it down, and it must have written instructions for doing so.
  6. Only rack devices with at least two power cords and two power ports for each required connection may be used. Additional remote management connections can currently not be offered.
  7. The institute is responsible for setting up remote or maintenance access.
  8. For operating the infrastructure (Rack, a/c, USV, emergency power), currently an amount of € 50 per used rack unit and started calendar year will be charged for the server’s entire period use. In addition, a € 100 installation fee will be charged and used for the attachment of the necessary hardware (cable, adapter, KVM switch). The fee per rack unit will also be charged for storage, institute KVM switches, NAS drives, and network components. It will also be charged if old devices are replaced by new ones.It will not be charged for devices which were set up before 2009.
  9. We reserve the right to immediately take down or turn off the virtual machine if there is a hacker attack or if there is malware. The operator will be informed immediately via telephone and, if he or she cannot be reached, via e-mail.

Procedure

  • You can use a form to tell us the necessary data for the server and confirm that you accept the user regulations. We will clarify whether and when a server can be installed and contact you.
  • The installation of the operating system on the server is completed and the server is ready for installation with the requested network access (network cards/transceiver, LACP- /IP configuration). This facilitates a quick installation and use of the system. It is not possible to install the server inside of the KIM Machine Room!
  • If you want to cancel the server housing, please send an informal email to kim-it@uni-hohenheim.de.
