Video conferences and online-seminars with DFNconf

With DFNconf you have two technologies at your disposal: Pexip and Adobe Connect. Both can be used for video conferences, e.g. for meetings, workshops, seminars, and smaller lectures. Large e-learning lectures can be streamed via Pexip.

You need an account if you want to host a meeting, but it will be created automatically the first time you log in. If you are only invited to a meeting, you do not need an account.

Technical equipment

Software for Adobe Connect

You can use it in your web browser. The first time you launch Adobe Connect, an app (Windows, Mac, IOS, or Android) is automatically installed and that is used to run the meeting.

Software for pexip

You can use it in your web browser. Apps are available for mobile devices (IOS and Android). On a desktop computer an app is not necessary, but there is one available (Windows, Mac, Linux).

Hardware

When using video and/or audio components, you need a webcam, microphone, and speakers. For passive participants, e.g. for a presentation, speakers are sufficient.

What to do

pexip

  4. You are now in pexip. If you want to use Adobe Connect instead, click on the "Adobe Connect" link in the top right-hand corner

  5. Create Meeting/Lecture
You can create an event once and use it repeatedly:
    - button on top [ Create ]
    - define name and host pin
    - if you want to stream (lecture), activate streaming under "More settings”

  6. Invite others to the event
You will find the contact details in the overview under invitation/text template. Send these including a time by email to all participants.

Lectures as video conferences

Holding lectures in real time as a video conference is not always the best solution. This is because with each additional person, the event becomes increasingly demanding for you on a technical, organizational, and didactic level. On a technical level, you must expect problems with individual participants in particular, but also problems of stability. We therefore recommend that you hold video conferences with no more than 30 participants.

Alternatively, you can also record lectures and publish them on our streaming server p2go.

This allows you to record the material either in the lecture hall or on your own device. Perhaps divided the lecture into smaller blocks of, say, 30 minutes. You can integrate these into ILIAS where you can also offer the possibility to ask questions which you can then answer there or in a new video.

You could always offer video conferencing as an additional place for questions and feedback.
