In August 2024, the University of Hohenheim established a fund to support open-access publications. Researchers at the University receive financial support for the publication of their research results in Open Access via the Publication Fund. For all Open Access articles, authors can submit an online application for funding participation for their publication. KIM is responsible for managing and processing the publication fund.

You can apply for funding during the entire publication process, ideally when your article has been accepted for peer review.

Funding is available for journal articles in fully Open Access journals (Gold OA) and hybrid subscription journals (Hybrid OA) and monographs.

 Who receives funding?

• All persons publishing at the University of Hohenheim. Prerequisite: Corresponding Author must indicate the affiliation University of Hohenheim

• In addition, the following note must be included in the Funding Acknowledgements:

   Publishing fees supported by Funding Programme Open Access Publishing of University of Hohenheim.

What is funded?

• Journal articles
  -    In fully open access journals (Gold OA) and hybrid subscription journals (Hybrid OA)
  -    No restriction to individual publishers or journals (except Predatory Journals and Mirror Journals)
  -    No funding for “Non-Research Articles”

• Quality assurance for articles:
  -    Peer Review, Open Peer Review, Post Publication Peer Review, Community Peer Review
  -    Gold OA journals must be listed in the DOAJ (Directory of Open Access Journals)

• Monographs (no dissertations)

• License type: CC BY or CC BY-ND (CC BY-SA for books)

How much funding is available and what costs are covered?

• Funding is provided for 85% of the gross costs of a publication: max. €1,500 per article, max. €4,000 per article for top journals, max. €2,000 for monographs

• Exclusively APCs/BPCs (no administrative fees, no fees for licensing, color illustrations, excess length, submission charges, etc.)

• Funding is only possible as long as no other earmarked funds are available to finance the publication, which must be given priority (e.g. if there are third-party funds from projects)

• Double funding is not possible for different forms of aggregation (preprint and journal article, contribution to edited volume and journal article)

As part of the “Open Access Publication Costs” funding line for the years 2026-2027, the University of Hohenheim receives third-party funds from the DFG. This means that DFG-supported Gold Open Access Publications can be supported with an increased proportion of support. Support of up to 2,900 euros is possible, comprising 1,400 euros DFG support and up to 1,500 euros from publication fund support. Articles in Top Journals can receive a subsidy of up to € 5,400 per article.

Important note: If the publication has originated from DFG research support (third-party funds), there needs to be a notice to this effect in the Funding Acknowledgements. You must state this funding notice including the DFG project number (GEPRIS database) in your publication.

The University of Hohenheim will receive external funding from the German Research Foundation (DFG) for the years 2026 – 2027 as part of the “Open Access Publication Costs” funding program. This will enable DFG-funded Gold Open Access publications to be supported with an increased funding share. Funding of up to 2.900 € is available, consisting of 1.400 € from the DFG and up to 1.500 € from the Publication Fund. For articles published in top journals, up to 5.400 € per article may be funded.

Important note: If the publication resulted from DFG research funding (third-party funding), this must be noted in the “Funding Acknowledgments.” Please be sure to include the funding acknowledgment, including the DFG project number (GEPRIS database), in your publication.
