What is Storage Protect?
General information
Client/server application to secure and archive data.
We operate the Storage Protect servers in cooperation with the IZUS/TIK of the University of Stuttgart. The servers and tape libraries are located at the TIK in Stuttgart Vaihingen.
Technical background
- The client software is available on a variety of platforms and covers all system platforms found in Hohenheim. The client collects the local data from the computer and sends it to the server. There, the data is stored in a tape library. For safety reasons, the data is also copied to a second tape library at the HLRS at the University of Stuttgart.
- The server keeps a database. All the information required to manage a client's data or restore it if necessary is stored in it.
- Several versions of files are kept, and deleted files are kept for a certain time. This eliminates the need to perform full backups after the initial backup. Storage Protect, unlike other backup products, works on the "incremental forever" principle.
Instructions
Clients must be registered on the server. Users receive a password, which they should change as soon as possible. This protects the data against unauthorized access.
The user has the possibility to allow related computers (e.g., Windows 11 and Windows Server 2022), which are also located in the Storage Protect, to access the stored data. A distinction can be made between the individual hard disks and the type of backup (archive or backup) in the assignment of rights. It is thus possible to transfer a data set from one computer to another computer with the same or similar platform. Please note that archive backups must be requested separately. To do so, please email kim-backup@uni-hohenheim.de.
The clients can be entered by the administrator in “Schedules.” This automatically backs up the client to the server incrementally at a specified time. For this purpose, a corresponding program must run on the client which requests this schedule from the server and performs the backup according to this schedule. This program is usually started initiated when booting the computer.
