Systematic cataloguing

In the systematic listing, books are not listed according to date of receipt or year of publication, but according to a system based on the classification of the sciences or a subject. There are main groups (e.g. Business Administration or Chemistry) with different numbers of partly hierarchically structured subject subgroups (e.g. Business Management or Inorganic Stereochemistry). The notation designates the individual position within the system and stands for a specific topic within the subject area. One or more notations are assigned to a book depending on its content. Depending on the system, notations can be composed of letters and digits (e.g. ZB 20500) or be purely numerical (e.g. 3300).

Books on the same subject are given the same notation and are thus usually together in one place!

In the Hohenheim catalog, it is also possible to search for notations as an alternative to the text search with terms. Which notations come into question must first be taken from the corresponding system.

Classification system used

In the KIM Library, depending on the location, two different classification systems are used:

In the online version of the Regensburger Verbundsklassifikation, you can use a link to directly start a search for a notation in the Hohenheim Catalog.

The primary notation given to a book is usually also part of the call number in the open stacks of the Central and Departmental Libraries.
