Restart of interactive access to bwUniCluster 2.0 [17.06.20]
interactive access to the bwUniCluster 2.0 HPC system will be restored on Wednesday, 17 June 2020 at 15:00 During the first phase of the restart of production services, the following restrictions apply:
- The use of SSH keys is not possible.
- Access is limited to IP addresses within the campus networks of the universities of Baden-Württemberg. If you are outside of one of these networks, a VPN connection to your home institution has to be established first (see e.g. [1]).
- The password supplied by your home institution can no longer be used for logins on bwUniCluster 2.0. Please set a service password using bwIDM [2] instead.
- A direct SSH login on the compute nodes is not possible.
- External storage systems like LSDF are not available.
- The "SUID bit" cannot be used for files and directories.
Most of the restrictions mentioned above are planned to be removed by the end of July 2020. The KIT is coordinating the necessary additional security measures with their national and international partners with the goal to restore currently degraded community-wide services (e.g. data transfer, workflow managers, visualization, interactive jobs etc.) as soon as possible. The KIT would like to stress that, in addition to measures implemented on there side, they require your help in order to secure your accounts and the environment. Please protect your private SSH keys with strong passphrases and keep your client systems secure. The KIT-CERT has published a document with guidelines on SSH security under the name "SSH at KIT" [3]. For support requests please use the ticket system at [4] or the support mailing list uc-hotline@lists.kit.edu. We hope you will be able to resume your work despite the implemented restrictions.
