News about the bwSync&Share cloud storage service  [04.04.16]

The bwSync&Share service is a cloud-based storage service available to employees and students at universities and higher education institutions in the state of Baden-Wuerttemberg.

The service enables users to simply and securely exchange data between different computers, mobile devices and users.

It is operated by the Karlsruhe Institute for Technology (KIT) for the state of Baden-Wuerttemberg.

Different publications (see below) have already reported on this service although a detailed description can be found at http://www.alwr-bw.de/kooperationen/bwsync-share/.

The “Powerfolder” software on which the service is based has been continuously further developed in close consultation with the manufacturer since the start of 2014. We would like to advise you that an update to the latest version implemented in the second half of March has significantly improved the following points:

  1. Performance when using the service through a browser, such as Firefox, Chrome, IE
  2. General synchronisation behaviour

It is now also possible to transfer owner rights to other users via the online interface (browser).

Use of the service
You must first register at https://bwidm.scc.kit.edu/user/register-service.xhtml?ssn=sns to use bwSync&Share.

The service can then be accessed at https://bwsyncandshare.kit.edu where you can log in using your Hohenheim user account.

Apart from using the service via a browser, stand-alone Powerfolder clients are also available that you can download at https://bwsyncandshare.kit.edu/.

Privacy and data security information:
The data stored via bwSync&Share is stored in the Large Scale Data Facility (LSDF) at the Karlsruhe Institute for Technology (KIT) and thus remains within German jurisdiction.
