General tips for safe use of the Internet [16.03.22]
The Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) has compiled ten important tips that you should take to heart for safe surfing behavior. The tips were taken from the BSI brochure (in german). Detailed information on the BSI tips can be found in the brochure and on the BSI website (in german).
- Set up your web browser securely and keep it up-to-date. Browser extensions should be disabled or uninstalled if necessary.
- Keep your operating system and other software current by allowing updates to be installed automatically.
- Use applications for virus protection and a firewall. Some operating systems already offer such applications, but they must be activated.
In this context, please note the BSI's warning against the use of Kaspersky antivirus products. The BSI recommends replacing applications from the Kaspersky company's portfolio of antivirus software with alternative products. - Create different user accounts and, if possible, refrain from using the device with administrator rights.
- Protect both your local user accounts and your online accounts with secure passwords. If possible, use two-factor authentication as well.
- Be wary of emails and the attachments and links they contain. They are also used to infect devices with malware or to grab data.
- Be wary of downloads, especially if they are programs. It is best to download them from the manufacturer's sites.
- Be cautious about sharing personal data and only share it via encrypted connections (https).
- Always look for an encrypted connection (https) when surfing. You can recognize it by a lock symbol or a similar marking in the address bar of the browser.
- Make regular backup copies on external storage media.
