New central file service (CIFS) in operation - restrictions with the old file service (AFS) from 1 February, 2021 [18.01.21]
Import reminder to the message from 25.11.2020
Commissioning of the university's new central CIFS file service
As a successor to the old file service (AFS), a new modern CIFS file server environment was gradually developed and put into operation campus-wide in October of last year.
CIFS stands for 'Common Internet File System'. It enables storage and joint processing of data on network drives, the so-called CIFS shares. Unlike AFS, CIFS is a standard procedure, so in most cases no additional software needs to be installed.
The owners of a Hohenheim user account automatically have a home directory on the new CIFS file server to store their personal files. Project directories are created on the file server for working on joint projects. The files stored on the CIFS file server are backed up using so-called snapshots and the TSM backup service in cooperation with the University of Stuttgart.
More about the new CIFS file server (general information and usage):
- Personal storage space for students
- Personal storage space for employees
- Storage space for cooperative projects

Restrictions on the old file service (AFS) from 1 February 2021
For more than two decades, the AFS file server has served as a central storage location for home and project directories of students and employees of the University of Hohenheim. The now obsolete AFS is gradually being replaced by a modern CIFS file server (see above).
The data on the AFS file server have been backed up to tape via the TSM backup service of KIT (Karlsruhe) for many years.
Unfortunately, this service will be discontinued by KIT on 31 January 2021. This means in plain text that if a file stored on the AFS file server is deleted after this date, it can no longer be restored from the TSM backup. This considerably reduces the security for file storage on the old AFS file server.
Therefore, please copy your data from the old AFS to the new CIFS file server by 31 January 2021 at the latest.
Please note when copying large amounts of data from the home office: Usually the upload of files in the home office is much slower than the download. For this reason, we recommend that you copy from the old AFS to the new CIFS file service at your workstation in Hohenheim.
Because of the migration of the AFS project directories we send an information e-mail to the users. However, you are also welcome to contact us via e-mail.
