Subscription cancellation of databases, periodicals and newspapers at the end of 2018  [20.11.18]

Due to the tight budget situation, KIM cancelled the subscription for databases, printed and electronic periodicals and newspapers as of the end of 2018.

The reason for these comprehensive cancellations is an application of the KIM to the rectorate for the allocation of additional budget funds. In 2018, the rectorate provided more than € 400,000 additional funds for the procurement of periodical packages provided by the major publishers of scientific literature subject to the condition that otherwise subscriptions for media in the amount of € 100,000 must be cancelled in 2018 and that these funds must be saved starting 2019.

Here you can find an overview of the cancelled media

The list for suggested cancellations of media by KIM was - to the extent possible - prepared based on formal criteria such as usage numbers, redundancy of content, access possibilities etc. This list was coordinated with the rectorate, the deans and the faculties’ offices within the scope of a process that took in total two months. Due to various constraints, such as e.g. provision of usage numbers and notice periods, the time window for coordination purposes was unfortunately very limited.

The content of the cancelled bibliographic databases (e.g. FSTA) is to a large extent redundantly contained in other licensed databases (e.g. Scopus).
A part of the Academic Search Complete content (ASC, supplier EBSCO) are freely accessible. Many ASC indexed periodicals are covered by the still available electronic subscriptions. The bibliographic data of ASC overlap with the databases Business Source Premier, Scopus and Wiso.

Electronic access to the periodicals of the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC periodicals package) remains permanently available as archive up to and including the year’s issues 2018.

Full texts (content predominately in the layout of the newspaper) of current issues of daily and weekly newspapers continue to be available within the databases WISO and Nexis. Süddeutsche Zeitung and FAZ are licensed as databases by the University of Hohenheim and continue to be available online.

If you have any questions regarding the continued availability of content please contact: kim-bib@uni-hohenheim.de or the colleagues at the information (459-22096).

Independent of the cancellations of subscriptions by KIM, the following licenses for Module 4 of the Core Facility Hohenheim (DALAHO) expired in 2018:

•    Bloomberg (cancelled from 06.07.18)
•    Orbis (cancelled from 31.05.18)
•    Tick History (cancelled from 31.12.18)

These databases were funded by Core Facility and not by KIM.
