Access to Hohenheim network via VPN

 If you want to use your notebook, tablet, or smartphone to access the Internet on campus , you will need a VPN client in addition to a physical connection via WLAN/LAN. The VPN client fulfills several functions:

  • You use it to  identify yourself to the Hohenheim network as belonging to the university and therefore authorized to use it.
  • It provides for an encrypted and therefore secure Internet connection
  • And you will receive a Hohenheim IP address (144.41.*), which is necessary for using some services in Hohenheim. With you can also use Hohenheim resources from home (see worldwide).
  1. Cisco Secure Client only supports the current operating systems.
  2. You need multi-factor authentication for the VPN connection.

Installation

  1. Download the corresponding VPN client.
  2. Now install the VPN client on your system.

Connect and disconnect

  1. Start the client. In the field “connect,” enter “vpn.uni-hohenheim.de“ and confirm using “connect”.
  2. Identify yourself with your Hohenheim user account and your second factor (you can find out how to set up multifactor authentication here).
  3. If you have a VPN connection, then in the Windows taskbar / in the Mac dock you will see a closed padlock.
  4. To disconnect, right-click with the mouse on the padlock.

The Cisco Secure Client app is available for iOS and Android.

Installation

  1. Download the "Cisco Secure Client" app from the Play Store or App Store.
  2. Start it and add a new VPN connection:
    Description: any name
    Server(address):     vpn.uni-hohenheim.de
  3. Save this configuration.

Connect and disconnect

  1. Start the app and activate the VPN connection to Hohenheim.
  2. Identify yourself with your Hohenheim user account and your second factor (you can find out how to set up multifactor authentication here).
  3. Now you can use other apps as usual
  4. To disconnect, go to the app and disable VPN.

Installation

  1. Open a terminal and, if necessary, change to the download directory in which the tar file is located: 
    cd Downloads/

  2. Unpack this (tar) and run the installation program as root:  
    tar xvfz cisco-secure-client-linux64-5.1.10.233-predeploy-k9.tar.gz
    cd cisco-secure-client-linux64-5.1.10.233/vpn/
    sudo sh ./vpn_install.sh

    Note: 5.1.10.233 stands for the version number and may need to be adjusted.

Connecting and disconnecting

  1. Search for the Cisco Secure Client using the program search function and start the client(/opt/cisco/secureclient/bin/vpnui) or enter /opt/cisco/secureclient/bin/vpn connect vpn.uni-hohenheim.de in the terminal.
  2. You will be asked for your access data. Identify yourself with your Hohenheim user account and your second factor (for information on how to set up the multi-factor authentication, clickhere).
  3. To disconnect, press the “Disconnect” button or close the terminal.

  1. Open a terminal and switch to the download directory in which the tar-file can be found: 
    cd Downloads/

  2. Unzip it (tar) and install the installer package as root:
    tar xvfz cisco-secure-client-linux64-5.1.10.233-predeploy-deb-k9.tar.gz
    sudo apt-get install -f ./cisco-secure-client-vpn_5.1.10.233_amd64.deb

  3. If you want to verify the signature of the installation package:
    sudo apt-get install gnupg
    gpg --import CiscoSystemsInc.pgp
    gpg --verify cisco-secure-client-vpn_5.1.10.233_amd64.deb

    Please note: 5.1.10.233 is taken for your version number and must be customized if necessary.

Connecting and disconnecting

  1. Search for Cisco Secure Client using the program search function and start the client (/opt/cisco/secureclient/bin/vpnui), or enter /opt/cisco/secureclient/bin/vpn connect vpn.uni-hohenheim.de in the terminal.
  2. You have to enter your login data. Use your Hohenheim user account and your second factor (you can find out how to set up multifactor authentication here) to identify.
  3. To exit the connection click disconnect or close the terminal..
