Shibboleth access to specialist databases, e-journals, and e-books

Frequently asked questions and answers about the topic of Shibboleth.

Who can use Shibboleth?

As a rule, students and staff members of the University of Hohenheim may access the licensed offers via Shibboleth.

Are all electronic offers available through Shibboleth?

Not all licensed offers are currently available through Shibboleth. This service is continually being expanded, however. A first hint as to whether you will be able to use a resource through Shibboleth can be found in the Database Information System (DBIS).

For electronic offers that are not available through Shibboleth, you can continue to log in to the university network using a VPN access.

How does Shibboleth work?

Authorized users then retrieve the desired electronic resource (database, e-journal, e-book, etc.). With some providers, you are immediately directed to a login screen. In other cases, you must first select your country (or “DFN-AAI” for Germany) and the University of Hohenheim from a pull-down menu. You can then identify yourself with your Hohenheim user account.

Who do I talk to if I can’t sign in?

Please send an e-mail to kim-bib@uni-hohenheim.de

Do I still have to log in when I’m on campus?

As soon as you are sitting at a computer in the University network or log in to the University of Hohenheim WLAN with your mobile device via VPN, you should be able to access the services directly in most cases (IP login). It is then not necessary to log in via Shibboleth.

Are there other Shibboleth access points at the University of Hohenheim?
