Using GPTalk effectively: strengths and limitations [16.04.26]
GPTalk is a powerful AI tool designed for everyday use in higher education – with a particular focus on data protection, flexibility and collaboration. At the same time, GPTalk deliberately sets itself apart from commercial AI apps such as ChatGPT.
To help you get the most out of GPTalk, it is worth taking a clear look at the system’s typical strengths, as well as its limitations.
Strengths of GPTalk
Maximum possible data protection
Content is not used for training purposes; it is stored only temporarily for the purpose of detecting misuse. No logging takes place in the case of GWDG’s open-source models. Furthermore, content is not linked to specific individuals.
Wide range of models
In addition to OpenAI models, open-source models from the GWDG and other systems such as Claude are also available. This means that the most suitable model can be selected depending on the task, and different models can be compared directly with one another.
Collaboration with AI
GPTalk supports group chats involving AI, making it particularly well-suited for teamwork, discussions and brainstorming.
Equal access to AI
GPTalk offers all university members – students, researchers, teaching staff and administrative staff – free access to generative AI. This ensures that even those without their own financial resources can make use of these technologies.
What GPTalk is not intended for
GPTalk is not a fully automated ‘all-in-one’ system with specialised tools running in the background. This results in a number of important limitations:
Responses are based primarily on the language model itself
Unlike some AI apps, calculations, research or complex analyses are not automatically verified by external tools.
→ Results should always be checked when carrying out important or sensitive tasks.
Hallucinations are possible
As with all language models, there may be instances where content sounds plausible but is not correct – particularly in the case of:
- References
- current facts without web search enabled
- complex or highly specific questions
Not every task is equally suitable
GPTalk really comes into its own when it comes to:
- Organising thoughts
- Summaries
- Draft texts
- Programming guide
- Idea generation
It is less suitable for:
- reliable specialist research without source verification
- precise calculations without verification
- statements of a legal or academic nature that are controversial but have not been validated
Practical advice
Use GPTalk as an intelligent sparring partner, not as your sole source of definitive results.
If you make targeted use of its strengths and are aware of its limitations, you will have a versatile, powerful and privacy-friendly tool for study, research and administration.
