bwSync&Share: Deactivation of the "Share by mail" app [19.05.25]
On 2 June 2025, KIT will deactivate the "Share by mail" app in bwSync&Share, which was activated at the beginning of the year.
Activation of the app was necessary at this time to enable sharing with the additional email addresses added to your own account (https://www.scc.kit.edu/ueberuns/18255.php).
The latter is now also possible without activating the "Share by mail" app and we will now deactivate this app again.
Further background to the deactivation:
The "Share by mail" app allows users to share data via a public link with users who do not have an account in bwSync&Share. However, this procedure offers less security than creating a guest account, as the link can be passed on uncontrolled and no authentication is required.
As the field with the letter symbol is displayed as the first option, many users may unknowingly opt for this less secure method.
However, it is still possible to create a public link. Users can do this by selecting the plus sign next to "Share link" when sharing. Users can then set the desired authorisations for this public link and set a password and an expiry date. This is recommended so that no public links can be used by unauthorised persons. Users can then send the created link and the corresponding password by email to the desired email address.
