Technical documentation for the publication server
The IT aspects of the server are overseen by Mr Henning Reineke. The publication server was set up in 2000. In 2007, it was migrated to newer hardware and Opus version 3.1. In 2008, the server was virtualised on different hardware.
The new machine is in the University of Stuttgart’s server room in the Computing Center. The server room is locked and only accessible for administrators.
Technical information
Hardware | The host system is a Fujitsu Siemens Rack with two processors and an 8 GB RAM. |
Virtualisation | SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 9 is running on the machine. The server is virtualised with VMware Server 1.x. The virtual machine is configured with a processor and 1 GB RAM. The OPUS Server’s virtual harddrive is on a server-internal RAID5 with 250 GB for system installation and data. |
Software | SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 9 is installed as the operating system on the virtual PC. The application is made available by an Apache 2 with PHP 5. The full text server software OPUS is version 3.1. The metadata are saved in a MySQL 5 database. Access to the system and the database server is protected with personal identifying information. Due to the firewall, ssh connections to the server are only possible from a few IP numbers. |
Data privacy | The log data of the Apache webserver are anonymised every night. |
Securing the system | The confirmations of Apache and MySQL as well as the Opus PHP scripts, the database copies, and the full text are backed up every night in the University of Stuttgart’s TSM. The entire system undergoes regular maintenance. In the case of a server failure, within one day the system can be reconstructed with the standard software and import of the backed-up data. |
