Help for the Expert Search

The expert search in HohSearch - executed in the basic search field - offers you the opportunity to phrase very precise search strings with the help of field names.

Without entering field names the search will be executed in the fields persons, corporate name, title keywords, subject headings, publisher, year of publication and type of media. This corresponds to the free text search.

Search terms that consist of several words must be put in parentheses, otherwise the second and subsequent word is searched in the free text field.

ti: domestic cat => Search the title field for 'domestic' and in free text by 'cat'

ti: (domestic cat) => search in the title field for the individual words, no matter in which order

ti: "domestic cat" => Search in the title fields for the individual words in this exact order

Truncation

Search terms can be truncated to the right in all fields using an asterisk (*). A left-hand truncation is not possible.
E.g.:
au:(goeth*)

A truncation in the middle of a word is also possible. In this case the asterisk (*) stands for any number of characters. This form can often be useful with different spellings or languages. However, it may also often result in an unexpected high number of results.
Example for the search for Pennsylvania or Pensilvania: ti:(Pen*vania).

If only one letter is to be truncated, the search with a question mark ? will usually lead to more precise results than a middle truncation.
E.g.: ti:(tos?ana)
E.g.: au:(ma?er AND f*) AND ti:marken*

Boolean operators: AND, OR, AND NOT

You can use the Boolean operators „AND“, „OR“ und „AND NOT“. Please keep in mind that the the operators must be written in upper case!

Multiple search terms entered are automatically linked with "AND".

However, the operator "AND" must be typed if terms are truncated or if a field code is used (see below).

With the help of the operator "OR" you can expand your search, and you can restrict it using "AND NOT".

Examples:

Korfu OR corfu

si:RE6512* AND ti:(schwäbische heimat)

ti:unix OR ti:tcp AND NOT ti:linux
