Data & Statistical Consulting

General

The module ”Data and Statistical Consulting” (DSC) supports researchers at the University of Hohenheim working on empirical research projects in the areas of data collection, data management and data analysis using statistical and econometric methods. For this, we provide individual statistical-consulting appointments for researchers and students of the university. Furthermore, we manage the Hohenheim Datalab (DALAHO) which offers members of the university free access to various commercial databases. We also give courses in statistical programming (e.g. R) on demand.

Statistical Consulting

We support researchers at the University of Hohenheim working on empirical research projects by providing individual consulting sessions. In these sessions, we guide researchers on the interpretation of statistical results and help to find statistical methods that address their research questions optimally. Together with our student research assistants, we also consult students of the university on questions regarding their empirical Bachelor’s or Master’s thesis. Here, we mainly focus on helping students with issues and questions about statistical models and applied methods. Appointments for individual consulting can be scheduled at any time here.

Datalab Hohenheim (DALAHO)

Besides our consulting services, we also manage and maintain the Hohenheim datalab (DALAHO). The DALAHO is a platform for members of the university providing access to several commercial databases. Members and students are able to access the databases for free (DALAHO Sign-Up). Our database portfolio consists of several data bases that cover a large field of economic data sets, such as:

  • CRSP (Stock market data; Historical information and market data, such as price, volumes, profits, dividends, historical name data; Daily and monthly closing data, such as capital market time series)
  • S&P Capital IQ (Detailed information on company events; includes mergers and takeovers, private equity, venture capital, spin-off, IPOs, bankruptcies, stock buyback programs, and others; rating information)
  • Refinitiv Eikon + Datastream (Stock prices, market capitalization, dividends, etc. for around 75,000 stocks worldwide including industrial and threshold countries; over 400,000 international macroeconomic time series with indicators for 215 countries. Exchange rates for 45 countries, over 2,000 interest rates)

just to name a few. For a full list of all databases see here. Furthermore, we also provide consulting for our databases, and, in cooperation with the database providers, training sessions for first-time and advanced users. These training sessions are open to all members of the University of Hohenheim.

Research

We also carry out research in the fields of econometrics. Here we also collaborate with external partners. An example for this is our GDP nowcasting project for the state of Baden-Württemberg in collaboration with the Institute of Applied Economic Research (Institut für Angewandte Wirtschaftsforschung; IAW).
Starting in 2020 and in cooperation with the IAW, we have developed a nowcasting model for the nowcasting and forecasting of state-level GDP for the state of Baden-Württemberg. To do so, we use a highly-dimensional mixed-frequency forecasting model and exploit a large dataset of regional, national, and international indicators of monthly and quarterly frequencies. Therefore, we are able to produce high-quality predictions of current quarter GDP changes before official numbers are published.
